Why You Should Dress Up for Class

There are many college students who would spend hours and hours just to get ready for class, not because they’re doing schoolwork or cramming, but because of their need to be fashionable.

On the other extreme, there are those who simply don’t give a hoot about what to wear. Either that, or they’re too hung over to even think about what to wear to class.

Which type are you? Are you fashionista, or a total slob? We advocate the middle road. While you need not overly obsess about your looks and your signature clothing, we still recommend that you should dress up for class. Here are some reasons why:

It shows respect for your professor.
Showing up looking proper will give your professor the impression that you’re taking his/her class seriously. If you enter class in sweatpants or PJ’s, it makes you look like a lazy slob and makes you seem like you don’t want to be there. It could be very disrespectful and depending upon your professor’s sensibilities, quite improper.

It makes it easier to focus in class.
People who are too comfortable in their clothes (such as in your PJ’s) tend to fall asleep in class or get bored more easily. Maybe this is because when you’re wearing the clothes you’re usually in when going to sleep or lounging around, you tend to feel that way no matter where you are. If you’re dressed a little nicer, you won’t be tempted as much to fall asleep or daydream while in class.

It makes you look good and boosts your self-esteem.
There’s a measure of vanity within all of us. No one who wants to make a good impression would want to look disheveled in public. Also, if you look good, you tend to end up feeling good about yourself. You might even receive a few compliments here and there. It boosts morale and confidence, and it’s a great reason to smile knowing that others look well upon you.

Recommended basic outfits

  • For guys: pants that actually fit, a decent-looking shirt, and sneakers or any closed shoes.
  • For girls: pants or skirt of respectable length, a top that doesn’t reveal too much, and great shoes (avoid heels—they will hurt by the end of the day).
  • Avoid at all cost: sweatpants, PJ’s, stained clothes and clothes that look unkempt.

And remember, dress with personality. Make a style your own while keeping within the limits of decency and respect appropriate for the academic atmosphere of college. As the cliché goes, dress for success!
